Illegal Fishing Info

IUU fishing is a serious global problem, one of the main impediments to the achievement of sustainable world fisheries. Worth between $4bn and $9bn per year, IUU fishing represents a major loss of revenue, particularly to some of the poorest countries in the world where dependency on fisheries for food, livelihoods and revenues is high.

IUU fishing respects neither national boundaries nor international attempts to manage high seas resources. It thrives where governance is weak and where countries fail to meet their international responsibilities. It puts unsustainable pressure on fish stocks, marine wildlife and habitats, subverts labour standards and distorts markets.

The purpose of this site is to provide background information on the key issues in the debate around illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, together with news stories, information on events, key documents and links to other relevant websites.

IMCSNET - The international MCS Network

Recognising the interest in providing for the long term development of sustainable marine resources around the world, and recognizing the benefits of coordination and cooperation in fisheries-related monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) activities, the country participants in the International Conference on Monitoring, Control and Fishing Surveillance (Santiago, Chile, January 2000) indicated their intention to create an international network for the coordination of fisheries-related enforcement.

The International MCS Network is an arrangement between national organizations with responsibility for fisheries-related MCS activities. These organizations have been authorized by their nations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their activities through enhanced cooperation, coordination, and information collection and exchange among organizations responsible for fisheries-related MCS.

Participation in the International MCS Network is voluntary, but encouraged and access to the site is restricted. Organizations with MCS responsibility may request participation.

In late 2005 there were almost 40 IMCSNET members. FFA members who are also members of the IMCSNET are:

AUS; FSM; KIR; NZ; PNG; SOL; TON;

Additional Members of interest to FFA members are;
