About the Organisation

 The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) is an intergovernmental organisation working to strengthen national capacity and regional solidarity so Pacific nations can manage, control, and develop their tuna fisheries now and in the future.

Based in Honiara, Solomon Islands, FFA’s 17 member nations are Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Since 1979, FFA has facilitated regional cooperation so that all Pacific countries benefit from the sustainable use of tuna – worth over USD $3 billion a year and essential for many people’s livelihoods in the Pacific.

About the Opportunity

FFA is now inviting applications for the position of Deputy Director-General, based in Honiara, in the Solomon Islands, on a full-time basis.

This is a critical position in the executive team of the FFA Secretariat. As Deputy Director General, you will be responsible for oversight of the governance and conduct of the Agency’s technical and professional activities and providing direction on the execution of the Agency’s work programme.  In support of the Director General the role has responsibility for the oversight of all strategic, technical and administrative aspects of the FFA Secretariat.

More specifically, your day-to-day duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Corporate Governance and Strategic Management,
  • Policy advice and Coordination,
  • Advice and support to meetings of FFA Members,
  • External Engagements,
  • Country Partnership Agreements (CPAs),
  • Business Planning and Organisational Reporting,
  • Advocacy,
  • Donor Relations and
  • Acting Duties.

The specific activities/tasks and responsibilities are specified in the Terms of Reference.

About You

To be successful in this position, you will have a tertiary qualification in fisheries management, fisheries development or related fields. You will also have a minimum of 10 years’ senior or executive leadership/management and governance in an intergovernmental organisation or medium-large sized national or regional organisation, corporate or similar organisation, demonstrated a high level of experience, knowledge and understanding of Pacific fisheries issues in the fisheries sector.

This position requires someone who can manage multiple activities at any given time and the ability to prioritise and delegate workloads as necessary to deliver work within tight deadlines. You will have exceptional written and verbal communication skills and the ability to pursue Secretariat goals within approved government parameters.

Please Note: Previous experience living and/or working in the Pacific Region is also desirable. 

About the Benefits

 The Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) is offering the successful candidate a competitive remuneration commencing circa US$115,417 (subject to exchange rates) TAX-FREE for citizens of most countries, commensurate with skills and experience. You will also have superannuation paid at 7.5% into either a nominated fund or as an additional cash supplement. FFA reimburses all reasonable medical, dental, and optical expenses for yourself and your dependents. Insurance coverage is also provided for personal accident, life, medical & repatriation.

Education for dependent children will be reimbursed at 75% of tuition fees (Conditions apply). If your dependent child is educated overseas, paid school travel may be available for you or your child to visit each other once for each contract year.

Accommodation assistance is also available.

Additionally, relocation expenses will be paid, with an establishment grant paid on arrival in Honiara.  Annual airfares back to your country of repatriation will be provided, and a repatriation allowance of 2 weeks’ base salary on return to home base at the end of your contract. There is also a retention incentive of 21% of your base salary, which will be paid on the completion of your three-year contract.

On top of all this, you will have access to 6 weeks of annual leave each year, giving you plenty of time to explore this stunning part of the world!
