WHAT WE DO

Monitoring, Control and Surveillance

Vessel Monitoring System & Vessel Register

Vessel monitoring

Our Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) allows our members to track and monitor fishing activities across the region. The VMS is a satellite-based system that monitors the position, speed and direction of registered fishing vessels.

Accessible to all our member countries, it is based out of our regional headquarters.

Fishing vessels are required to install a transmitting device (an Automatic Location Communicator), which signals a land-based receiving station where fisheries managers can view and track their location.

This tool allows fisheries managers to better promote people’s compliance with any area closures or restrictions that may be in place, and helps scientists and managers understand how and where fishing is happening.
