WHAT WE DO

Economic and Social Development

East New Britain Initiative

Maximise the economic benefits from Members’ tuna fisheries by processing tuna in the region through developing fisheries, regional hubs and spokes, and other value-addition initiatives.

To enhance the benefits of tuna fisheries for member countries of the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), Fisheries Ministers adopted a Joint Communique at the 23rd Special Forum Fisheries Committee (FFC) Ministerial meeting in Kokopo, East New Britain Province on 4 September 2023.

This communique officially launched the East New Britain initiative (ENBi), which supports the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ vision in the 2050 Strategy to leverage their shared tuna resources and find collective and inclusive investment pathways.

The ENBi aims to maximise the economic benefits from Members’ tuna fisheries by processing tuna in the region through developing fisheries regional hubs and spokes and other value-addition initiatives. It also aims to establish a regional fisheries development fund for members.

The FFC Ministers endorsed the establishment of a working group to advance ENBi through the FFA Secretariat and its membership in collaboration with Partner Agencies.

Subsequently, the working group was formed with Papua New Guinea as the Chair and held its inaugural meeting in late 2023 on the margins of the WCPFC meeting in Rarotonga, Cook Islands.

The East New Britain Initiative Working Group (EWG) comprises of Papua New Guinea (Chair), Australia, Cook Islands, FSM, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and FFA.
