About the Honiara Summit 2025
The Honiara Summit 2025 will be co-hosted by the Solomon Islands Government and the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO), and the Special Oceans Envoy of the UN Secretary General.
The Honiara Summit will centre on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 14.4. This target is part of the broader SDG 14—“Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”—which recognises the vital role that healthy marine resources play in human well-being and in supporting social and economic development worldwide. This focus aligns with global initiatives such as the FAO’s Blue Transformation roadmap and the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.
Tracking progress on SDG 14 helps countries evaluate their natural capital, the sustainability of their development, and the health of their marine ecosystems.
SDG 14 includes 10 interconnected targets, with SDG 14.4 specifically addressing sustainable marine fisheries. It calls for the effective regulation of harvesting and the end of overfishing, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, along with science-based management plans to restore fish stocks to sustainable levels.
This target is especially significant for the Pacific region, which leads the world in GDP contribution from sustainable fisheries. While there has been notable progress, such as the successful restoration of tuna stocks to sustainable levels in 2021, challenges remain—particularly in by-catch management and the conservation of mangroves, coral reefs, and other vulnerable ecosystems.
Limited resources and infrastructure also mean that coastal fishery resources in the Pacific are not yet fully assessed or managed.
